Welcome to The White HouseLiz and I met in 1991 working aboard the P&O Liner, MV Sea Princess, where Liz was in the Purser's Office and I was below decks in the galley. After four years afloat we made the move back to dry land in 1994 with an ambition to open our own hotel and restaurant. Having married and started a family, Mollie was born in 1997, and Tom some two years later, we brought our ambition to fruition and found The White House in the coastal village of Charmouth in April 2001. We were delighted that we had found this beautiful old Regency Building in an area as wonderful as West Dorset. It was, however, in need of updating in nearly all areas. We set about this task and within a couple of years we had replaced all the bathrooms, carpets, furniture and bedding and brought the hotel to a standard with which we and, more importantly, our customers were happy. With our own business we had the freedom to source as many of the ingredients we use in the kitchen from the local area and we soon discovered that West Dorset, and indeed the South West as a whole, is a treasure trove of superb locally produced food and drink. We are truly fortunate to live in this part of the world and to have such wonderful producers and suppliers on our doorstep. We are also pleased to have won many awards for our food and service from 'Taste of the West', the most recent being Gold for both Restaurant and Bed and Breakfast in 2012. We are also in the Michelin Guide and have a "Certificate of Excellence" from Trip Advisor. We are also fortunate to have a very good team working with us, and our two full-time members of staff, Tracey and Hannah, have been with us for over eight years now and are as much a part of the White House family as our children Mollie and Tom who can be found washing the pots and hoovering bedrooms occasionally! Expectations of what a hotel should offer is constantly evolving and what was acceptable ten years ago now falls somewhat short of the mark. ( How many hotels offered free WiFi ten years ago?) To this end, in January 2013, we once again set about a major refurbishment of the hotel and now have four large luxurious bedrooms and a new lounge and dining area. We have retained the elegance and style of this lovely old Regency house and we are now confident that The White House surpasses the comfort and style that modern travellers have come to expect. We hope you do too, and we look forward to welcoming you to Charmouth and to the White House. Ian and Liz Simpson |
