We stayed for three nights as a result of a River Cottage accommodation list. Although the event was cancelled, there was still plenty to see in the area, and the hotel turned out to have been a good choice. We were in the Premier room: this was well worth the extra charge as it's a large room with a huge, clean, modern bathroom (and huge bath!). Fresh flowers and fruit were a nice touch, and it's round the back, so very quiet
The food at the hotel should not be missed - it is quite excellent, and the dining room is delightful. There's a justified pride in using local ingredients (even English wines) and the dishes were varied and interesting as well as well-cooked.
We booked as we were having an evening at River Cottage HQ, the whole weekend was fantastic. We booked the premier room and it was gorgeous, enormous bathroom with a huge bath made for two. There was a lovely bowl of fruit, relaxing cd's and a huge comfortable bed. The owners were really friendly and great breakfast served till 10.00am. We had the most amazing weather and walked from Charmouth along the rocky beach to Lyme Regis.
My wife and I have just returned from a very enjoyable weekend break at The White House. We booked it largely on the basis of glowing reviews by other Trip advisor members and we were not disappointed. The owners and staff could not have been more welcoming and helpful, our room was very well appointed with some nice extra touches and the food at breakfast and dinner was outstanding. We also had some excellent wine at reasonable prices.
So many hotels these days are either totally impersonal at the larger end of the scale or totally pretentious at the "boutique" end. It was great to find somewhere that has, to our taste, got everything just right. We will definitely go back and would wholeheartedly recommend The White House
The White House doesn't fit neatly into either the B & B category or the hotel category, nor the restaurant with rooms category. It's way better than your average south coast B & B, it's way friendlier than most hotels and the food is excellent. We stayed in room 1, which is small but perfectly presented in a demure French country house style (cream walls and curtains, white bed linen, mis-matched antiques), which was cosy and charming rather than chic.
